Storytime does not need to be long or perfect to be meaningful. A few relaxed minutes with a book can give your child a sense of closeness, new words to play with, and a reason to wonder about the world.
Make the book feel like an adventure
Try these small ideas the next time you open a picture book together:
Let your child choose the book, even if it is the same one again.
Pause to ask what they notice in the pictures.
Use different voices for characters and invite them to join in.
Guess together what might happen on the next page.
Connect the story to their day, like a walk, a pet, or a friend.
Keep the moment cosy
A favourite blanket, a quiet corner, or a regular time before bed can turn reading into a ritual your child looks forward to. If attention drifts, that is okay. Close the book and come back to it later.
The goal is connection first. A love of books grows naturally from there.
